Wann und warum werden direkte Objekte im Spanischen mit „a“ markiert? Die Frage nach der differentiellen Objektmarkierung wird in diesem Buch mit Fokus auf unbelebte Objekte untersucht. Unbelebte Objekte werden im Allgemeinen nicht markiert und sind daher sowohl in der empirischen Beschreibung als auch in der theoretisch-typologischen Diskussion weitgehend vernachlässigt worden. Auf der foundation einer breit angelegten Korpusanalyse wird gezeigt, dass es eine kleine, aber stabile Klasse von Verben und Konstruktionen gibt, bei denen die Markierung unbelebter Objekte stark präferiert oder sogar obligatorisch ist. Im Rahmen einer rollensemantischen examine auf der Grundlage von Dowty (1991) und Primus (1999, 2006) wird die Hypothese verteidigt, dass die differentielle Objektmarkierung weniger eine Frage von nominalen Individuierungseigenschaften wie Belebtheit und Definitheit ist, sondern ursächlich mit der ausgedrückten Verbalhandlung zusammenhängt. Mit einer Markierung unbelebter Objekte ist insbesondere dann zu rechnen, wenn Subjekt und Objekt rollensemantisch nicht distinkt sind bzw. das Objekt genauso agentivisch wie das Subjekt ist.
