Feasibility study of the modernization of LED tubes to replace fluorescent lamps in an office building

LED lighting tubes that replace fluorescent lamps save up to 79% of energy consumption and improve brightness levels by an average of 17%. In a study conducted by Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa, researchers compared their energy savings, lifespan and annual energy savings in an office building.

To evaluate the benefits, they compared the costs of maintenance and replacement of fluorescent lamps compared to the modernization of current installations with LED tubes. In office environments with large commercial applications, the potential savings are greatly increased due to the large number of luminaires used. It is also suggested that in this environment, productivity can even be increased due to the improvement of the quality of light.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

When considering the financial impact associated with such a renovation, a number of factors are taken into account. First, the money saved on the electricity bill results directly from a reduction in kWh, and secondly, the money saved through a reduction in lamp replacements and maintenance calls. The third factor takes into account the design of a new office installation, where fewer luminaires per square meter can be specified due to improved light levels and better light quality.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

For this study, the financial savings directly related to energy savings are shown in Figure 4. In this example, a thousand 58W T8 fluorescent tubes are replaced by a thousand 22W LED tubes. The lights are on for 12 hours a day from Monday to Friday, giving a total of 60 hours a week. According to the accumulated data, the “break-even point” according to Figure 4 is reached after 34 months. This means that for the LED installation, the initial cost of the renovation is recovered in less than 3 years and at this point, the installation starts to save money.
